Introduction

The Northern Territory (NT) has a number of legacy mine sites which pose a risk to the environment and/or public safety.

Most of these sites ceased operations before 2005 and predated the requirement for operators to lodge a rehabilitation security bond and have either inadequate or non existent securities. The estimated level of historical mining liabilities in the NT is $1 billion.

It is in the collective interest of the mining sector to see legacy issues addressed, as their continuing presence is potentially having adverse impacts on the environment and can reinforce community opposition to mining, especially when new developments are being proposed.

This guide provides information on how the legacy mines issue is being addressed including information on the:

  • levy and security
  • legacy mine inventory
  • strategic direction.
