Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in McArthur River and tributaries

Environmental monitoring undertaken by McArthur River Mine (MRM) has reported elevated  concentrations of some metals in aquatic organisms within the mine lease, but also in limited  samples from adjacent catchments.

The NT Government determined that an  independent review of the MRM monitoring program and its results was required.

The  review (this study) aims to assess potential heavy metal contamination emanating from MRM,  as well as determining background levels in the broader region based on existing data.

The  focus is on potential effects on human health from consumption of affected aquatic species.
