Exploring for the Future

Exploring for the Future is a new $100.5 million initiative by the Australian Government that aims to boost Australia's attractiveness as a destination for investment in resource exploration.

The program focuses on Northern Australia in recognition that this under-explored region offers enormous potential for industry development is close to major global markets.

The Northern Territory (NT) has encouraged Geoscience Australia to focus programs in the Exploring for the Future initiative on increasing knowledge of the resource potential in the Barkly region.

Geoscience Australia’s leading researchers will be working with the department’s experienced NT Geological Survey team to gather new pre-competitive data and information on what lies underneath the surface of the NT.

This geoscience program will benefit regional areas of the NT, particularly the Barkly, by stimulating increased exploration activity and with flow-on benefits to local exploration service suppliers. The longer term goal is the discovery and development of new resources which are important for the future of the Territory’s economy.

The Exploring for the Future geoscience initiative will support the NT ’s own $23.8 million investment through the Creating Opportunities for Resource Exploration (CORE) initiative.

The data gathered through these programs is made freely available and helps the industry and the community better understand the geology and minerals, energy and water resource potential of the Northern Territory.
