Mine expansion will increase production
A recently completed US$120M expansion to operations at Newmont’s Tanami gold mine is expected to produce up to an additional 80,000oz of gold per year.
The expansion, which began in 2015, involved the construction of a 3.2km-long second decline to underground workings, and expansion of the processing plant and mill, which involved adding a ball mill, thickener and gravity circuit to improve recoveries at the mill.
The expansion also extends the projected life of the mine by about three years.
It was opened at an official on-site event on Monday 9 October.
The mining and resources industry is an important contributor to the Northern Territory economy and is responsible for about 4,800 direct jobs in the Territory.
Around 120 jobs were created during construction of the Tanami expansion and up to 18 additional jobs will be created as a result of the expanded operations.
Newmont’s Tanami operation, 540km north-west of Alice Springs, is one of the largest and most successful gold producers in Australia. The mine has a 4.5 million ounce gold reserve and has produced around 8 million ounces of gold since it commenced in the early 1990s.
