Animal Protection Bill introduced to Parliament
A new Bill has been introduced into the Legislative Assembly to ensure greater protection under the law for Territory animals.
The Animal Protection Bill 2018 aligns and builds upon the existing regulatory framework in the Territory, with clearly defined rights, roles and responsibilities for government, industry and the community for animal welfare matters.
The Bill includes stronger penalties for animal welfare offences, which if adopted will help deter individuals from acts of cruelty, and appropriately punish those convicted of such offences.
If passed in the May 2018 Sittings, a new Animal Protection Act upon its commencement will replace the current Animal Welfare Act which has been in place for almost 20 years.
More information about the Animal Protection Bill can be found on the Department of Primary Industry and Resources website.
