This work is part of a national Rural Industry Research and Development Corporation project looking at genetics and agronomic management of quinoa. Similar trials are being run in each state, with the Western Australia, Department of Agriculture and Food  working as the lead agency. The Department of Primary Industry and Resources (DPIR) trial is looking at genetics, sowing time, plant population and nutrition.

This project is a long term trial screening different varieties of rice for various performance measures. Aromatic rice commands higher prices both locally and internationally. Several varieties of fragrant rice have been trialled for suitability in the Top End.

Plant growth regulators have been used to modify height and improve lodging in other crops. This project will assess the effects of plant growth regulators on promising aromatic rice cultivars.

Updates

Plant growth regulators significantly reduced plant height, however yield was also reduced. Timing of application and dosage are important tools in managing the use of plant growth regulators, best results were obtained from application at 20 days post emergence, with rates of 100-200 g a.i/ha.
